Getting Bogged Down

The week my boss went to SxSW was a week I had some problems with my code. Rather than try to muck through without her I decided to take the rest of that week off.

So I only worked one day that week. and I spent most of it deleting spam.

I don't mind deleting the spam. Some of the commenters are funny or informative and I sometimes take a couple of minutes to read the article that the comment is attached to. It gives me a sense of what Linux Journal is all about.

I have one more post about non productivity then It will be all good news I am sure.

I was sick [Week of March 15]

I missed the week of March 15 from work. I worked from home on the 16th. just doing my spam delete thing, but was out the rest of the week with a cold. That was a rough week.

At my Internship

I am working in a small office with 6 others. There are the three regular employees of the company, my boss Katherine, Tracy- who I still don't know what she does, I think she's in advertising, The publisher Carlie, and Mark the co-publisher. There are also two other interns doing graphic design work for the ad department. Sadly I can't remember their names at this time.

They have set me up at what once was the receptionist desk. I don't answer the phone though. I'm not exactly sure the phone works anyway. It's a nice place to work really, up at the front desk.

The ladies are all in the back of the building and the dudes are up front. Funny how it's segregated like that. I don't mind though because the ladies are all very loud and we can hear them talking in the front of the building.

They are very entertaining usually. Their new buzzword is cougar. They are constantly going on about the cougars. I think there's a bit of jealousy going on to be frank.

So I'm sat at my desk doing my thing and it's a pleasant experience.

Cheers.

Week One Round Up

It was a good week I think getting to know my coworkers, becoming accustomed to my surroundings, figuring out my schedule and trying to figure out my job.

I am working for Belltown Media which manages the website for Linux Journal. So I am getting myself educated about the open source revolution.

My boss is a lady by the name of Katherine Druckman. She is younger than me which is not surprising. I would guess her to be in about her early 30s. She is nice enough. The others in the office are Mark, Tracey and Carlie. I don't know what Mark and Tracey's jobs are yet, I think Mark is involved in the management of the office, but I do know that Carlie is the owner of the company. There are several others with the company, but these are the only ones that work in this office.

The main thing I intend to accomplish during my internship is to master using the content management system Drupal. It's a very extensive program, and I am very excited to be working with it.

The most of what I did my first week aside from getting set up in my work environment was read documentation about Drupal. I have a lot more of that to do before I will have the confidence to actually begin using the program.

Other than that I am being required to delete spam from the websites messageboards. That's a tedius job, but it's got to be done. So long as I am allowed to do the other things I don't mind taking care of this daily drudgery.

The Night Before

I begin my internship tomorrow. I'm pretty excited actually. I haven't had a job in over two years and I've gotten pretty accustomed to the life of a student.

I'm also a bit nervous. I'm going to be working with a new group of people that I don't know much about. I hope that I like them and they like me. My impression from the interview is they are a pretty laid back group which suits me very well. At any rate, I'll know much more about the situation by the end of this week.

I'm going to work for a company that manages a website for a magazine about Linux. I know very little about Linux so I'll need to come up to speed on that rather quickly. There will be a lot of content management using Joomla. I am very interested in learning how to use this software so I am excited to be doing that.

Karen, my supervisor emphasized in the interview that I would be spending some of my time monitoring spam on the messageboards. I hope this doesn't occupy too much of my time as I feel it would be a waste of my internship. We'll have to see how that goes.

Tomorrow is the day I begin.
